You should always export your file in millimeters (mm). Many drawing programs export by default in inches or centimeters. If you upload a file drawn in inches, but the system reads it as millimeters, your model becomes 25.4 times too small. This results in a price close to 0 INR, which is a clear indicator of an error.

If your model for a mobile cover is listed as being 2 meters long, you must rescale the file in your drawing program before proceeding.

How do material choice and infill affect the price?
Many mistakenly believe that the price drops by half if you choose a material that is half as expensive. That is not how reality works within professional manufacturing.
We can look at a concrete example with a simple reveal spacer. The raw material (filament) for this part might only cost 115.00 INR. However, the total price for the part typically lands at around 680.00 INR.
The reason is that the machine spends the same amount of time running, regardless of whether it melts cheap PLA or the more expensive PETG. Therefore, the price only changes slightly when switching materials, as the raw material constitutes the smallest part of the total cost.
You influence the price most effectively by adjusting the “infill” (degree of filling) in your design. A solid block takes a long time to print. A block with 20% infill is almost as strong but much faster to produce. Therefore, choose the lowest possible acceptable infill to reduce your 3D print price.
What does your 3D print price actually consist of?
When you see the price on the screen, you are seeing the result of a calculation we call “Landed Cost” or total costs. We believe in transparency, so here we review the four elements you are paying for.
Firstly, you pay for machine costs. A 3D printer slowly wears down while it works. A typical industrial machine has an effective lifespan of approx. 13,000 active print hours, which corresponds to roughly 3 years in a busy production. Every hour therefore costs money in pure depreciation and ongoing maintenance.
Secondly, you pay for electricity. A professional 3D printer draws an average of 150 watts per hour. This corresponds to a powerful old-fashioned incandescent bulb glowing constantly for 5 to 20 hours per item, depending on the size.
Thirdly, the price covers labour. Even though the process is digital, each item requires manual handling. A technician typically spends 2 to 5 minutes per part starting the machine, removing the item, cleaning off small defects (“boogers”), and packing it securely.
Finally, there is the material. As mentioned earlier, the raw material itself often constitutes the smallest part of the total price. You are primarily paying for access to a calibrated machine and a technician’s time, rather than for the gram weight of the plastic.
How do you avoid the most common 3D print price errors?
If the calculator rejects your file or shows a warning, it is often due to geometric errors in the file. Your file must be “manifold”. In short, this means it must be watertight. Imagine filling your digital model with water. If the water leaks out through a hole in the surface, we cannot produce it as a 3D print.
You should check your file for three specific errors before upload. Look for “Non-manifold edges”, which are holes in the model’s surface. Check for “Inverted normals”, where the system thinks the inside is facing out. Also, be aware of wall thickness. If a wall is thinner than 0.8 mm, the nozzle cannot physically print it, and the part will break.
