Three main elements determine the price: material, machine time, and labor. Many believe that material constitutes the largest expense. Reality often looks different. For a standard test model, like the popular “Benchy” boat, the costs of machine wear and manual handling often exceed the price of the raw material itself. Labor typically constitutes the largest item, followed by machine depreciation, while material often sits lower in the total account.
What does the choice of material mean for the final price?
The price of the raw material forms the base of the calculation. A standard spool of 1 kg high-quality filament typically costs around 1,800 INR. This gives a price per gram of approximately 1.80 INR. A small model of 13 grams, therefore, costs only about 23.40 INR in pure material. This sounds cheap, but the calculation changes drastically if you choose specialty materials or multi-color 3D printing.
In color printing, the 3D printer must clean the nozzle at every color change. This process creates a “purge tower” of waste material. Many people overestimate the price of electricity in the total calculation. A standard FDM 3D printer typically draws between 200 and 300 Watts during heating, but drops to an average of around 200 Watts during the actual run.
In practical terms, this means the machine uses 0.2 kWh per hour. With an average electricity price in 2026, one hour of operation costs approximately 6 INR in power. For a print that takes two hours, the electricity bill is only 12 INR. Power consumption is therefore a negligible factor in the total price compared to labor wages and machine wear.
How does the machine’s depreciation affect the price?
Every time a 3D printer runs, it loses value. We calculate an hourly rate based on the machine’s purchase price, upgrades, and expected lifespan. A professional machine typically has an expected lifespan of approximately 12,000 active hours.
If a machine park costs 6,00,000 INR to establish, the machine costs about 50 INR in pure depreciation for every hour it prints. Additionally, tooling costs cover expenses for consumable parts. Nozzles and build plates wear out and must be replaced regularly. A build plate might last 5,000 hours, while a nozzle needs changing more often when using abrasive materials. After the print, the part must be removed from the machine, and support material must be cleaned off manually. This easily takes another 15 minutes. With a professional hourly rate for technical work, these 30 minutes quickly add up to a cost that exceeds both material and electricity many times over. This is why you often see a setup fee or a minimum price, regardless of how small the part is.
What is the difference between production price and sales price?
We distinguish between the pure production price and the final sales price. The production price covers material, machine time, and wages. The sales price must also cover the company’s fixed costs, also known as overhead.
Your order pays a share of the rent, utilities, software licenses, and marketing.
